京都・御幸町通。若者文化と老舗の風情が交錯する通りに佇む、築150年以上の木造二階建て京町屋「田中屋旅館」。
今回の計画は、この旅館の二階にある客室二部屋をつなぎ、アパレルブランド「NATAL DESIGN」の新たな店舗へと生まれ変わらせるプロジェクトです。
「NATAL DESIGN」は、伝統と現代カルチャーを独自の感性で融合し、アートやファッションを横断するデザインを提案するブランド。
私たちは、そのブランド哲学を空間に落とし込み、江戸時代から続く京町屋の建築美と、NATAL DESIGNが築いてきたカルチャーのエッジが響き合うようなストアデザインを目指しました。
長い年月が刻まれた梁や柱をそのまま活かし、床にはクラシカルなアキスミンスターカーペットを敷設。壁は左官仕上げとし、天井に残る木組みの存在感と、紺と赤のコントラストが互いを引き立てる構成としました。
床から壁にかけてカーブを描く腰壁を設け、空間の境界をあえて曖昧にすることで、柔らかさと緊張感が共存するデザインに。
空間を構成するのは、歴史を宿す構造材、クラシカルなカーペット、藍色のモルタル、そしてオブジェのようなアンティーク什器。これらが調和し、クラシックとモダンが溶け合う新たな感性を生み出しています。
１階が飲食店、２階が宿泊とショップという構成の中で、人の流れが自然に交差する動線計画も魅力の一つ。異なる目的を持つ人々が空間を共有することで、街や人との関係性に新しい寛容さが芽生えるように感じられます。
この空間は、単なる販売の場ではなく、ブランドの世界観を体験し、共感を深めるための「場」。
スタッフと来訪者が対話を重ね、価値観を共有できる場所として、NATAL DESIGNらしい文化が静かに息づいています。

Located along Gokomachi Street in central Kyoto—a place where traditional charm meets youthful culture—this project transforms two adjoining guest rooms on the second floor of the 150-year-old “Tanakaya Ryokan” into a new store for NATAL DESIGN.
NATAL DESIGN is a brand known for reinterpreting tradition and contemporary culture through its own lens, merging art, lifestyle, and fashion into expressive design.
Inspired by that philosophy, our goal was to create a space where the timeless beauty of Kyoto’s machiya architecture resonates with the brand’s distinct and edgy cultural identity.
We preserved the aged texture of the existing beams and pillars, layered the floor with classical Axminster carpet, and finished the walls in hand-applied plaster.
By juxtaposing deep navy and vivid red within the exposed wooden ceiling, we created a visual dialogue that celebrates contrast and balance.
A softly curved wainscot blurs the boundary between wall and floor, lending a sense of quiet tension and fluidity to the space.
The design harmonizes history and modernity through materials—aged timber, luxurious carpets, indigo-toned mortar, and antique glass fixtures that act almost like sculptural objects.
The result is a store that reflects both the warmth of heritage and the experimental spirit of fashion.
Within the building, a restaurant on the first floor and the shop above are connected through a shared passageway, allowing guests and diners to cross paths naturally.
This subtle interaction fosters a sense of openness and connection—values that align with Kyoto’s evolving urban culture.
More than a retail environment, this is a place where the brand’s world can be felt.
Through dialogue, shared curiosity, and atmosphere, visitors engage with NATAL DESIGN beyond the product itself—experiencing the brand’s philosophy as part of their own story.
