大阪・豊中庄内。人情と温もりが息づく下町の一角に、静かに佇む「hmc-café」。
クライアントの「地元の人々に、少しお洒落で日常的に立ち寄れる場所をつくりたい」という想いから、このプロジェクトは始まりました。
築50年を超える木造建物は、かつて立ち飲みと居酒屋が並んでいた閉鎖的な空間。開口がなく、外からは様子が分からない物件でした。私たちはその“閉ざされた印象”を払拭し、道ゆく人にやわらかく存在を感じてもらえる開放的なカフェへと再生することを目指しました。
このカフェは、キャンドル作家でもあるオーナーが主宰する「体験型キャンドルワークショップ」とカフェを融合した新しいスタイル。光と香り、そして人の会話が自然に交わる空間をデザインしています。
限られた面積の中で、扇形の敷地を活かすため、奥の壁を基準に放射状の軸線を設定。天井板張りを入口へ向けて広がるように割り付けることで、奥行きと開放感を生み出しました。軸線上にカウンターを設け、客席とキッチンの距離感を自然に整えています。
コストを抑えながらも、素材と色を厳選し、木・モルタル・グレー・グリーンで統一。エントランスには高さ2.7mのシンボルツリー〈カシワバゴム〉をモルタル製プランターに植え、訪れる人をやさしく迎え入れます。
ファサードはテーマカラーのグリーンを基調に、ユーカリとオリーブの中間色を選び、街並みに溶け込みながら印象的な佇まいに。
木の温もりとコンクリートの無機質さが調和した空間は、北欧モダンの静けさとやさしさを併せ持ちます。
「コーヒーとキャンドルで人と人をつなぐ」。
この場所が地域に灯りをともす、そんな存在であり続けることを願っています。

Nestled in the warm, down-to-earth neighborhood of Shonai, Toyonaka, “hmc-café” quietly opens its doors.
The client’s vision was simple yet heartfelt — to create a stylish yet approachable place where locals could relax in their daily lives.
The 50-year-old wooden building once housed two small bars with no street-facing openings, giving it a closed-off atmosphere. Our design sought to reverse that impression, transforming it into an open and welcoming space that softly communicates its presence to passersby.
As the owner is also a candle artist, the café combines a hands-on candle workshop with a relaxing coffee space — a place where light, scent, and conversation intertwine naturally.
Within a compact footprint, we embraced the fan-shaped site by establishing a diagonal axis from the back wall toward the entrance. Wooden ceiling panels were arranged in a radial pattern, enhancing depth and openness. The counter follows this axis, gently dividing the kitchen and seating area.
Working within budget constraints, we pursued a minimalist palette of wood, mortar, gray, and green. A 2.7-meter fiddle-leaf fig planted in a mortar pot stands at the entrance as a symbolic welcome.
The façade features a calm green — between eucalyptus and olive — blending harmoniously with the town while leaving a lasting impression.
Inside, the warmth of wood meets the modern coolness of concrete, creating a serene Nordic-inspired atmosphere.
With “coffee and candles connecting people” as its concept,
hmc-café shines as a gentle light in the local community.
